BILINGUALISM IS A LIFELONG COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
Various studies suggest that bilingual speakers develop greater mental flexibility, resulting in an advanced ability to process conflicting information to identify the most important information. We believe that the best time to learn a second language is during your child's developmental years. This skill will also enhance your child's attentiveness and short-term memory, and help to provide them with greater opportunities in the future.
IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO START; BUT STARTING EARLY HAS ADDED BENEFITS
Infants exposed to dual languages can sometimes take longer to learn to speak, but extensive studies done have found that lifelong exposure to bilingual environments create extensive competitive advantages – greater creativity, lateral thinking, and the ability to focus deeply – and that's just the tip of the iceberg. That said, it's never too late to start. Many children have come to us at ages 6-10 knowing zero Spanish, and have not only caught up… but excelled!
THE IMPORTANCE OF A SOUND EDUCATION
We are proud to implement our proprietary Momentum Curriculum, designed with professional standards and age-appropriate lessons to keep learning engaging and effective. In elementary school, we go beyond the standards of learning, enriching our curriculum to challenge and inspire students. Unlike public schools, we also teach cursive handwriting, giving our students an edge in fine motor skills and literacy. Our graduates leave with a strong academic foundation, ready to excel in any school setting.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A SAFE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT
All our teachers are first-aid and CPR certified. The school has an updated readiness plan in case of emergency. Our top priority is always safety first. We're proud to be highly rated with the Virginia Beach Police Department and continuously update our security training and protocols.
The importance of having fun while learning
Although we are an academic school, we still realize that our children are still young and need to have fun. This is why we encourage our teachers to share new ideas and express their creativity. We accomplish learning in a variety of ways that are designed to excite and appeal to every child.
Our Story
Founded in 1992, Courthouse Academy began as a vision of Kym Pomares, who wanted more than what traditional preschools offered for her two young daughters—so she created it herself. In 2012, her passion for language and education led her to transform Courthouse Academy into a Spanish immersion school, giving students the lifelong advantage of bilingualism.
Kym, of Cuban descent, didn't grow up bilingual but always believed knowing another language was key to success. Her love for Spanish flourished in high school and grew into a lifelong passion. Inspired by her daughters' experiences living and teaching in an immersion school in Spain, she brought that same opportunity to Courthouse Academy.
For over 30 years, Kym and her dedicated team have provided academic excellence through innovative curriculum and engaging learning experiences. Their beautiful facility nurtures infants through fifth graders in a dynamic English-Spanish environment that stimulates young minds, builds confidence, and makes learning fun.
